PUBLIC TRANSPORT Private car ownership in Turkey is new and
relatively few families own a car. For this reason there are very good
public transport systems in Turkey as follows:
DOMESTIC FLIGHT SERVICES
Turkey is a large country, so when time is limited flying between the
main touristic centers is the best option, a twelve hour journey by
luxury coach takes only one hour by plane. Domestic flight services are
currently available from three companies with daily flights between all
the main tourist resort airports. Most domestic flights between city
airports are via Istanbul, though there are now several direct city to
city flights. Business class seats are available on some flights.
Check-in time for all domestic flights is one hour before the scheduled
departure time.
INTER-CITY
COACH SERVICES
For those on a limited budget Turkey has a very efficient luxury coach
system operated by several companies. Most long distance services are
overnight, coaches have WC facilities, steward service and stop at
purpose built rest areas with restaurant. In the larger cities the main
coach station is outside the city with free shuttle-bus services to the
companies city offices.
RAIL SERVICES
The railway network in Turkey is government owned, slow and
inefficient except for the fast link between Istanbul and Ankara. There
are plans to upgrade the rail system, but in the meantime it is better
to take one of the other forms of public transport.
LOCAL MINIBUS
SERVICES (Dolmus)
Every town and even most villages in Turkey operate local
minibus services. Fares are cheap, there are no set timetables and the
bus leaves when it is full, hence the name, (dolmus means stuffed). The
minibuses operate from the local bus station and stop when requested to.
In busy towns there are specific dolmus pick up stops, otherwise just
flag down the minibus with the name of your destination on the front.
